Microsoft New Surface Tablet PC
The Microsoft Surface tablet is the newest addition to the tablet computer market. The design is intended to be lightweight with a large screen and access features that can make the tablet feel more like a laptop despite the relatively small size of the unit.
The actual Microsoft Surface tablet has a 10.6 inch touch screen and measures 0.3 millimeters in thickness. The tablet is fairly light and weighs slightly less than 24 ounces. The back of the casing of the Surface has a kickstand that folds out in order to allow the table to be held in a vertical position on a tabletop so movies or other media can be viewed without having to physically hold the tablet. High definition cameras appear on the front and the back of each unit.
The tablet casing has a magnetic cover that protects the screen and that can be folded out while the tablet is sitting on the kickstand. This cover lays flat in front of the unit and turns into a 10-inch keyboard that makes it possible to enter data into the Surface without using the touch screen features. The folding keyboard is flat and does not provide users with any tactile response when used.
Microsoft has planned to release two different versions of the surface tablet. The RT Surface is the less expensive model. This contains an Nvidia ARM processor and a hard drive that can hold either 32 gigabytes or 64 gigabytes depending on the option that is chosen when it is purchased. There are also a number of peripheral slots available that can accept a USB 2.0 cable, a microSD card, a microHD video output line and a smart antenna. The battery in the RT Surface can last over 30 hours on a single charge.
Microsoft has also developed the Surface Pro tablet that is intended to appeal to higher-end audiences and provides more powerful features. The Surface Pro replaces the Nvidia ARM with an advanced Intel processor that is similar to those that already appear in other ultralight portable notebooks. The hard drive can be upgraded to hold 128 gigabytes and the battery is able to last over 40 hours. There are also different peripheral options such as a USB 3.0 jack and a microSDXC reader.
The software that runs the Microsoft Surface Table is the Windows 8 operating system that uses a new typography-based user interface theme called Metro. The Surface RT tablet comes with the Windows RT operating system which is essentially a very trimmed down and incomplete version of Windows 8. The Surface Pro comes with the complete Windows 8 operating system and is expected to cost significantly more than the Surface RT.
