Google Glass

Google Glass is an experimental project from Google that combines a smartphone and glasses. Here’s some information about the project, including the features and benefits of the glasses.

What Is Google Glass?

Google Glass was a project that began in 2012. Essentially, it’s a pair of glasses that has a small square glass piece over one eye that functions as a screen for a smartphone. The glasses required connecting to a real smartphone to power everything, however.

But, this set up had a lot of benefits to it. For example, it allowed you to get directions from Google Glass sent right to your eyes. So, from your point of view, you could see giant arrows guiding your way down streets when you were walking on foot, for example.

Other Benefits

The makers also promised that you’d eventually be able to make phone calls to other people using your voice, and then have then come up on a video call while still allowing you to do other things at the same time. You could also transmit video of things that are in front of you as well so the person you’re talking to can get a sense for where you are.

The ability to take video and pictures easily with either a touch to the interface or through a vocal command was also a big draw. But the possibilities certainly didn’t stop there. The device was also focusing on the potentials connected to object recognition. This included being able to look at signs and identify them, or look at stores and get information about the store quickly and easily.

It was about having information readily available at all times.

Continued History of Glass

Eventually, Glass was so popular that they randomly gave out the privilege of spending $1500 on an initial pair of the glasses. This is so you could try them out and see how you liked them. In addition, you could give feedback to Google about how the glasses were working and any potential problems that were coming about regarding the glasses.

One problem that came up a lot was people’s concerns about privacy. It’s rumored that this is part of the reason why Google pulled the project. The company may need to redesign the device in order to address the privacy concerns related to the public’s instant recognition of the Google Glass design.

Current State of the Project

Google has halted the project as of recently. This could be a temporary condition, however. The main page for Google Glass says that the journey isn’t yet over, although all other information about the project on the main site has been deleted. You can sign up for regular updates about the project by filling in your email address and first and last name, however. Chances are good that Google will either restart the project at some point in the future, or, alternatively, they might start a new similar project using the lessons learned during the experimentation phase of the Glass project.
