Tablet Made in Haiti
Many third world countries have gotten an economic boost by having factories in that country. Now Haiti is seeing opportunity in the Tablet market. Two different tablet manufacturers have set-up shop in Haiti and have started manufacturing and selling tablets in the country. An article from the Associated Press, that appeared on the Jamaican Gleaner website , said that Surtab SA and Handxom SA would each be selling 7 inch tablet. According to the article, the current minimum wage for Hait’s workers is $4.18US and that most of Haiti’s people survive on less than $2.00US a day. Surtab currently pays their workers $6.14US a day. Each worker get a bonus per unit that could amount to $13 a day. There was no information about what Handxom SA would be paying their workers. Countries like China have been able to see many of their workers employed creating electronics for Apple and other major manufacturers. But working conditions have been notoriously terrible in the past. Frequent suicides among the worker led to nets being placed outside of the factory buildings to catch anyone that attempts to commit suicide. Since that time Apple has that they would be working to improve the working conditions of the factory workers. But it continues to be a work in progress as some working conditions are still in need of fixing; including incidents of workers working excess hours of overtime. As Haiti begins manufacturing tablet here I hope that this is an opportunity that will boost Haiti’s economy and put it on track for stability for its people.
